Loves: Writing, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, tea, homecooked food, magazines, London.
Weakness: Small talk. As in, I can’t do it and am likely to accidentally grill you about your identity at parties, sorry.
Favourite quote: I discovered this quote last Christmas after re-watching Sister Act 2 (the second best film about nuns ever) for the hundredth time. It’s from Rainer Maria Rilke’s ‘Letters to a Young Poet’, published in 1929, which Whoopi Goldberg recommends to Lauryn Hill’s character after a very tense scene – her mum won’t let her join the school choir, it’s awful. Here it is:
“You are so young, all still lies ahead of you and I should like to ask you, as best I can, dear Sir, to be patient towards all that is unresolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms, like books written in a foreign tongue. Do not strive to uncover answers: they cannot be given you because you have not been able to live them. And what matters is to live everything. Live the questions for now.”
Except I don’t know why you would love locked rooms.
